FRESHWATER FISHING TOUR

Take the NYS Thurway to Exit 48 and head north on Route 98 through the rural countryside of the Greater Niagara Region. This will take you to Point Breeze on Lake Ontario, a full service port offering everything you need for angling action. Head back south on Route 98 and you'll see the Orleans County Marine Park. A 400 foot long floating fishing dock is available, along with plenty of boat slips. Continue south on Route 98 to Park Avenue and head west 3 miles to Park Avenue Extension. Here you'll find a parking area adjacent to a trail that leads you down to the Oak Orchard River and a mile of prime trout and salmon water below the Waterport Dam. Head back out to Route 98 and travel north once again to Route 18.

Take a left and head west, entering Niagara County. Turn left on Route 78 and head south to Fisherman's Park, home of Burt Dam. Head back north to Route 18 and continue west by taking a left. Cross over the Town of Newfane Marina, another full-service port (Olcott) with access into Lake Ontario. As you head west toward Fort Niagara, pass Wilson (another port)and look for the entrance to the Robert Moses Parkway, take a right and head south into Lewiston. Take a right off the exit ramp and continue on Center Street until you reach the Niagara River. Take a right on Water Street and a left down to the water, part of Lewiston Landing. Head back east on Center Street to Route 104 west.

At I-190, head south toward Buffalo. Exit off Ontario Street and turn right onto Niagara Street. Take a right on Ferry Street to access the Bird Island Pier, a popular fishing area. Backtrack onto Niagara Street and continue south. Resume your southern trek on the I-190 and follow the Skyway to Fuhrman Boulevard. The Buffalo Small Boat Harbor is only a cast away, access to Lake Erie and an internal breakwall system. Head back out of Fuhrman Blvd. to Route 5 south. Following the Seaway Trail, take a right on Lakeshore Road to Sturgeon Point Road. Take a right into this popular launch ramp. Head back out Sturgeon Point Road and travel east on Route 20.

Take a right on Route 20A and continue east into Wyoming County and Silver Lake. Travel through Warsaw and look for Sucker Brook Rd. This will take you down (south) to Silver Lake State Park. In the winter, walk right out onto the ice for some prime hardwater action. After your stop, continue back north to Oatka Road and head east again. Letchworth State Park is your next destination, a great spot for fishing along the Genesee River, especially in the scenic gorge area. Middle Reservation Road will point you south and you have the option of taking Schenck Road into the park or continuing south on a series of roads outside the park. For the most picturesque drive, take the park road. Go back to Warsaw, either back up to Route 20A and head west or following any one of a dozen roads west to Route 19 and head north.

Route 19 will take you into Genesee County, the final destination of your five county regional tour. Take a left on Route 20 and continue to Darien Lakes State Park, which offers good largemouth bass fishing in the 12 acre Harlow Lake. If bass fishing isn't your style, don't turn on Route 20 and continue north into Leroy on Route 19. You'll actually cross over Oatka Creek, a popular trout haven for fly casters. Just a bit further north, you gain access to the NYS Thruway at Leroy, just a few miles east of where you started at Batavia.
